What AEO & GEO agencies really charge in 2026, and what you can do yourself

Retainers run from about $2,000 to $10,000 a month. Here's what's inside them, which parts software now handles, and where a human still earns their fee.

TL;DR

The price ranges, with sources

AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are young categories, so pricing is all over the place. These are the ranges published in 2026 pricing guides and agency rankings:

What you buyTypical priceSource
One-time AI visibility audit$500 – $2,000Vendor guides (LLM Pulse)
Monitoring-only retainer$500 – $1,500 / monthVendor guides
AEO / GEO agency retainer$2,000 – $10,000 / monthOutreachBloom 2026 pricing guide
Senior consultants, full service$5,000 – $12,000+ / month2026 agency rankings
Whole market, low to enterprise$1,500 – $50,000+ / monthWebFX, as cited by OutreachBloom

For a concrete, public example: AEO Engine, one of the fastest-growing AEO agencies, lists plans at $1,597, $2,997, and $5,000 to $10,000 a month. Its Stripe-verified revenue on TrustMRR shows about $158K MRR from 55 active subscriptions in October 2026, an average of roughly $2,900 per client per month. That's a healthy business, and it tells you what the market is willing to pay.

What's actually inside a retainer

Strip away the branding and almost every AEO retainer is five jobs:

  1. Tracking. Asking ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI the questions your buyers ask, repeatedly, and logging who gets named and cited. Agencies usually run this on a tool that costs them $29 to $499 a month (Otterly, Peec AI, Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound).
  2. Technical audit. Making sure AI crawlers can reach you (robots.txt, CDN bot rules), that pages are indexable, and that structured data (Organization, Product, FAQ schema) is in place.
  3. Content. Writing pages that answer the questions AI is asked: comparisons, alternatives pages, how-tos, clear product facts.
  4. Off-site and PR. Getting mentioned where AI looks: news coverage, review sites, communities, YouTube.
  5. Reporting. A monthly deck showing whether any of it moved.

Which parts software can do now

Three years ago every one of those jobs needed a person. In 2026, four of the five are largely automatable, especially if you already use a coding agent like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or OpenCode:

JobAutomatable?How
TrackingYesScheduled checks across engines, several runs per question, because answers vary run to run
Technical auditYesCrawl + rules: blocked AI bots, missing schema, non-indexable pages
On-site content & fixesMostlyAn agent edits your repo and opens a pull request you review
ReportingYesBefore/after measurement on every change, generated weekly
Off-site PR & earned mediaNoSoftware can find targets and draft pitches; a human should send them
Why the last row matters: Muck Rack's analysis of millions of AI citations found that earned media made up 82% of cited links in its December 2025 report (84% in May 2026, with a broader definition), and paid placements well under 1%. You can't automate your way into a journalist's article, and you shouldn't fake your way into Reddit.

What it costs: three realistic setups

Illustrative annual costs. The freelancer rate is an assumption; adjust it to your market.

SetupMonthlyPer year
Full agency retainerMid-market AEO agency$5,500$66,000
HybridPlugd Pro ($99) + your coding agent + part-time PR freelancer (~$1,500)~$1,600~$19,200
Founder DIYPlugd Indie ($29) + about 4 hours a month of your time$29$348

The hybrid setup keeps money where people make a difference (PR and partnerships) and moves the repeatable work to software. That's where most of the saving comes from, not from cutting corners.

When an agency is still worth it

Five questions to ask any AEO agency

  1. What's my baseline, measured on the questions my buyers actually ask, before you start?
  2. How many times do you sample each question? (A single run means little: SparkToro found AI tools return the same list of brands less than 1% of the time.)
  3. Do you report AI citations, or Google rankings dressed up as AI visibility?
  4. How do you handle Reddit and reviews? (The only acceptable answer is disclosed, genuine participation.)
  5. Can we start with a one-month pilot instead of a 6 to 12 month contract?
