How ChatGPT decides which brands to recommend

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the exact recipe. But official docs and several large citation studies point the same way: be retrievable, be talked about, and be easy to quote.

TL;DR

Step 1: retrieval. Can the AI even find you?

When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI says it uses third-party search providers plus content from partners (reporting indicates Bing is one of them). To be eligible you need to allow OAI-SearchBot; OpenAI says sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". Claude (Claude-SearchBot) and Perplexity (PerplexityBot) work the same way, and Microsoft Copilot is grounded on the Bing index.

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says a page only needs to be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet". There are no extra requirements. Both features use query fan-out: they fire several related searches across subtopics and pick supporting pages from all of them.

Check first: many sites block AI search bots by accident through robots.txt or CDN defaults. Our robots.txt cheat sheet lists every bot.

Step 2: what gets cited

Several large studies (most by companies that sell AI-visibility or PR tools, so read them as directional) agree on the broad picture:

Step 3: mentions beat links

Ahrefs measured 75,000 brands and found that how often a brand is mentioned across the web correlates with AI Overview visibility much more strongly than backlinks do:

SignalCorrelation with AI visibility
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Backlinks0.218

Correlation isn't causation, but the direction is clear: being talked about matters more than being linked to.

Step 4: Google rank matters less than it did

In Ahrefs' March 2026 study of 863,000 keywords, only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google's top 10, down from 76% in mid-2025 (methods changed between studies). Another Ahrefs study found just 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot appear in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Fan-out means a strong page for a sub-question can be cited even if you don't rank for the main one.

Step 5: freshness helps, a little

Pages cited by AI assistants were on average about 25.7% fresher than pages in organic results, according to Ahrefs (~17 million citations), with ChatGPT citing the freshest. Update pages when facts change, not just to bump the date.

Step 6: expect the answer to change

SparkToro and Gumshoe ran 2,961 tests across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI. The same list of brands came back less than 1% of the time, and in the same order less than 0.1%. But how often a brand appeared was fairly stable. That's why tracking presence across many runs beats checking your "rank" once.

For products: structured data

For shopping results, OpenAI says product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads", based on structured metadata from merchants and third parties (price, description), reviews, and the user's context. Merchants can share a structured product feed through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and Shopify stores are connected through Shopify Catalog. Keep price and availability accurate everywhere, including Google Merchant Center.

The checklist

  1. Allow AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot), including at your CDN.
  2. Keep key pages indexable and snippet-eligible.
  3. Publish pages that answer the exact questions buyers ask: comparisons, alternatives, "best X for Y", pricing.
  4. Add Organization, Product and FAQ structured data.
  5. Earn third-party mentions: reviews, press, communities (genuinely, and disclosed).
  6. Keep facts fresh and consistent across your site and listings.
  7. Track presence across many runs and engines, and measure each change.
